A new publication (doi.org/10.1021/acsomega.2c00248) by Émilie GEERSENS and Michael RYCKELYNCK (équipe « Biologie Digitale de l’ARN ») is now available online from ACS Omega. This work, performed in collaboration with Stéphane VUILLEUMIER (team “Adaptations and interactions of microorganisms in the environment”, GMGM, University of Strasbourg – CNRS), introduces a new way of using droplet-based microfluidics to culture microorganisms while reducing potential interspecies competition arising from differences in growth rate or secretion of antimicrobial molecules. Exploiting the droplet shrinkage effect of growing cells allowed to set-up an innovative approach to rapidly establish the absolute concentration of bacteria contained in a sample in a noninvasive manner, and to selectively recover individuals and populations of interest from mixed cultures.
