Bernard Lorber and Claude Sauter co-author with their partners of the ANR-COMBiNiNG consortium (ANR-14-CE19-0022) an article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, USA, describing the neutralisation of the Grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV). This collaborative work involving several CNRS institutes (IBMP, IGBMC, IBMC, CBS), the INRAE centre in Colmar and the University of Brussels, reveals the atomic structure by cryo electron microscopy of a complex between GFLV, a major pathogen of the vine, and a fragment of camelid antibodies commonly known as nanobody. Knowledge of this structure provides a better understanding of how the nanobody acts to neutralise the virus in the plant and reveals the circumvention mechanism involving mutations on the surface of the virus.
